Contact has joined energy sector leaders who have come together to launch the ‘Energy Transition Framework’, marking a significant commitment towards New Zealand’s energy system.
Announced last night at an all-industry event attended by Minister of Energy Simon Watts, the framework aims to ensure New Zealand’s energy system remains secure, affordable, and supportive of the high-growth economy as it transforms.
Contact CEO Mike Fuge says, “Our sector is committing to collective action and transparency as our energy system undergoes significant change as a result of the transition. The energy transition will take time, effort and teamwork.”
Contact is among others in the sector including generators, retailers, lines and distribution companies and independent consumer and advisory representatives that have signed up to the framework. It will focus on the electricity system and the essential role of gas and other fuels in ensuring resilience and reliability through the transition.
The top priorities are clear: delivering secure, affordable, and abundant energy for New Zealand homes and businesses.
Speaking at the launch, Framework Chair Nigel Barbour said New Zealand has an incredible renewable energy advantage.
“But we also need to plan for when the sun doesn’t shine, the wind doesn’t blow, or the lakes are low. A least-cost, reliable transition is key to keeping the lights on, homes warm, and Kiwi businesses operating at their full potential.”
“We must lift our game to help people understand what the transition means for them. That includes closing the knowledge gap and investing in the smart infrastructure – both physical and virtual – needed to modernise our system.”
